What is an RBT? Meet the Most Important Person on Your Team
If your child is starting Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, you have likely met a "BCBA" (Board Certified Behavior Analyst). They write the plan, set the goals, and supervise the program.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! But the person who will actually be with your child every day—playing on the floor, teaching them to tie their shoes, or helping them ask for a snack - is the RBT.
RBT stands for Registered Behavior Technician.
The "Teacher" vs. "Principal"
The easiest way to understand the difference between an RBT and a BCBA is to think of a school.
- The BCBA is like the Principal. They design the curriculum, oversee the school, and make sure every student is learning safely and effectively.
- The RBT is like the Teacher. They are the ones delivering the lesson plan one-on-one with the student.
While the BCBA creates the roadmap for your child's success, the RBT is the one driving the car.
What Does an RBT Actually Do?
An RBT’s job is to take the clinical goals written by the BCBA and turn them into fun, manageable activities. Their day-to-law involves three main things:
- Teaching Skills: Whether it’s learning to wave "hello," identifying colors, or waiting for a turn, the RBT breaks these big skills down into small steps.
- Managing Behavior: If your child gets frustrated or overwhelmed, the RBT is trained to help them calm down and communicate what they need, rather than acting out.
- Collecting Data: You will often see RBTs with a tablet or clicker. They are recording data on everything your child does. This isn't just paperwork—it’s how we know if the therapy is working.
Are They Qualified?
Yes. An RBT is a certified professional. To earn this title, they must pass a background check, complete a 40-hour training course on behavior analysis, pass a rigorous competency assessment with a BCBA, and pass a national board exam.
Crucially, they practice under constant supervision. At Gradual Behavioral Health, we ensure our RBTs are not just "supervised" on paper but are actively mentored and supported so they can provide the best care for your child.
The Heart of Therapy
Your RBT becomes a huge part of your child’s life. They are the ones who cheer the loudest when your child says a new word or conquers a difficult task. They are the hands, eyes, and heart of your ABA team.
